Charging Made Easy.

Charging the MINI Electric is easy and quick so you’re always ready to hit the road. Here you’ll find out about the convenient solutions for your home or en route. CHARGING AT HOME.

MINI Electric comes with two AC charging cables as standard. The first cable can be plugged into any home conventional socket. The second enables you to charge much faster using a Wallbox with a higher AC power supply. So when it comes to charging your MINI Electric – there’s no place like home.

Household plug.

You don’t actually need any complex installation or unit to charge at home. Simply use the standard occasional use cable that can be plugged into any regular AC 230 V power socket (SchuKo).

2.5 hours of slow charging will be enough for your next commute of up to 50 km.

Use the household plug overnight and you'll start the day full of energy with enough charge for several days of city driving. It will have recharged completely after approx. 15 hours.

WALLBOX SOLUTIONS.

You could consider having a Level 2 wallbox installed at your home. The second charging cable that comes standard is designed to work with such a unit and this offers you a convenient, faster alternative for daily charging – at home and when you're out and about.

More power: figures vary, but a dedicated, 3-phase 11 kW wallbox connection will generally give you up to 3-times faster charging time. So your MINI Electric can be fully charged within around 3.5 hours.

PUBLIC CHARGING.

Take advantage of the ever-growing number of public charging stations that are equipped with both alternating current (AC) via a Type 2 connector, and direct current (DC) via a CCS plug that gives you up to 50kW electric power.

TYPE 2 (AC) CHARGERS.

Your MINI Electric comes with a Type 2 cable, enabling you to charge wherever you go. The top part of your MINI's CCS inlet is used for AC charging.

This is the Type 2 connector and is compatible with your home charger, public AC charging points and domestic plug sockets.

CCS FAST CHARGERS.

You can also take advantage of fast charging of up to 50 kW via the Combined Charging System (CCS). This is the standard for rapid charging in Europe. The upper part of the plug resembles the Type 2 connector, it combines with the more powerful conectors below to allow AC power to be transformed by the MINI Electric to DC power that directly charges your battery with a much higher voltage and amperage.

CCS chargers include the charging cable and no additional hardware is needed. The combination of practically-sized charging capacity and stable charging performance of your MINI ensures you can take many ways to reach your destination – and always have several charging options within reach.

The range on a single charge is calculated on the basis of a customer-oriented test cycle. The actual range depends on a variety of factors, especially: wheel and tyre sizes selected, personal driving behaviour, route selected, weather conditions, usage of heating/cooling and preconditioning. Depending on external factors, such as the mains voltage or the outside temperature, the real charging times might deviate from the charging times shown in this tool. The charging times have been measured on the basis of an outside temperature of 25°C

If your employer hasn’t implemented workplace charging yet, and there is space, why not suggest it could be a good move. “IT REALLY IS A BREEZE RUNNING A CAR LIKE THE MINI ELECTRIC.”

“If you’re considering the switch to electric, I’d have to say just do it! I get so much more of a rush in the MINI Electric than I do in a petrol or diesel car. I think if people were better educated about electric cars in general – charging, costs, range – they’d be more comfortable about making the change.

I know a lot of people are nervous about charging, but there are charging points everywhere now. Also, the apps and tech available to you makes planning your journeys so much easier. It really is a breeze running a car like the MINI Electric.”

WHY MONWAR LOVES HIS MINI ELECTRIC.

Monwar recently made the switch to electric in a quest to make his business even more sustainable. In his free time, you'll find him driving along the Kent coastline in his MINI Electric, alongside his four-legged pal, Ziggy. We asked him to tell us about his experience of driving the MINI Electric and why he’s such a big fan. Here is what he had to say.

“It just feels fun.”

"I recently moved to Kent to expand my chai business, which I’m trying to make fully sustainable. My partner and I have always loved MINI, and I’m a big fan of "The Italian Job". The whole look and feel of the MINI are youthful and cool, while a modern MINI is compact, fun and really suits our lifestyle. The MINI Electric takes that a step further, with its awesome looks and futuristic features. It’s the perfect next step.

I particularly love the pearlescent paint. It feels like it changes colour, depending on how the sun hits it. The alloy wheels, which look like a three-pin plug socket, are also really cool. They’re an awesome way of showing it’s an electric car.

Inside the MINI Electric, the build quality is top-notch. The steering wheel particularly stood out for me. The feel of the leather and the way it sits in your hands seems so natural. The ambient lighting is another nice touch – especially the lights around the central dial. The way the lights change colour is so funky. It just feels fun.”

“Driving the MINI Electric is epic.”

"I’d never driven an electric car before I tried the MINI Electric. So, to be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. In short, it’s epic. When you go on longer journeys, the Green driving mode is great for preserving your range. But, of all the driving modes, Sport is my favourite. It makes me feel like a little kid nipping around town!

The power and instant torque from the electric motor are so impressive. The handling is really responsive, and the braking is sharp, too. I think that’s helped by the regenerative braking. When you lift off the accelerator, the car really slows down. But it only took me a short amount of time to get used to that one-pedal style of driving. In fact, the whole driving experience is super smooth.”

“It’s so easy to grab a quick charge.”

“When I first got my MINI Electric, I downloaded a few apps to help me locate public chargers. But, once you start driving an electric car, you start to notice chargers everywhere. I think people would be surprised by just how many charging points are out there. Supermarkets, motorway service stations, shopping centres, city streets – there are so many, and it’s so easy to grab a quick charge on the go.

I’ve used rapid chargers a lot to top up my MINI Electric. The fact you can get up to 80% charge in as little as 30 or 40 minutes for just a few quid is – well – it’s no time at all. Destination chargers are useful too. You mostly find them at supermarkets or in town centres. They’re slower than rapid chargers, but it means that when you get back from your afternoon of mooching around, you’re nearly at full charge.

When I was driving my petrol MINI Cooper, I was probably spending something like £30 to £40 a week on petrol. But, in the MINI Electric, it cost me something like £14 to run for 10 days. It’s crazy cheap, and that’s without us having a proper wall box fitted at home yet.”

“The MINI Electric is packed with tech.”

"My MINI Electric is a Level 3 – the top trim level – so it’s packed with tech. For me, the Harmon Kardon sound system is a real highlight. I love my music and I’m always listening to podcasts. The sound quality is just so clear.

It’s also super easy to connect my phone to the MINI Electric. As soon as you get in, it just links up. To be honest, the whole navigation and media system is so slick and simple to use. It’s also super easy to set up your own driver profile. By doing that, you can just click on your name, and everything adjusts to your settings.

When it comes to driving assists, Park Assist – along with all the radars and sensors – is super helpful in the small town where I live. It’s great for navigating narrow streets. And the head-up display: that’s wicked. I’d never driven a car with a head-up display before, but now I’ve used it I don’t think I could go back. Having key information right in your line of sight means you never have to take your eyes off the road.

I also love the sound the MINI Electric makes. I’m not sure what MINI has done, but there’s this ‘spaceshippy’ sort of noise when you accelerate! It’s really cool, and it makes driving more engaging. But, it’s not so loud that it drowns out my music. It’s just a very cool feature.”

MISTY, LONDON.

“AS TIME GOES ON, YOU ALSO START TO FIND CHARGERS THAT WORK BEST FOR YOU.”

The MINI Electric has other cool features that help you preserve your range. The different driving modes are great. There’s Sport, Mid, Green and Green+. I’m almost always in Green mode. I drive to Dorset regularly, and it’s great for long journeys. I’ve always got plenty of range, and the handling – the way the MINI Electric goes round country roads – feels great. It’s so smooth. A lot of thought has gone into making it fun and comfortable.”

WHY MISTY LOVES HER MINI ELECTRIC.

Misty is a London-based chiropractor and uses her MINI Electric to get around the city without having to worry about the congestion charge or Ultra Low Emissions Zone. As a part-time beekeeper, she's passionate about protecting the planet – so her all-electric car is making a good start. Misty kindly shared some thoughts with us about her MINI Electric driving experience – and tells us why she loves it so much.

“I love how my MINI Electric looks.”

“I’ve always loved how the MINI looks. I toyed with getting one for ages, but I also wanted to go electric, so the MINI Electric was the perfect fit. I love its British links. The Union Jack rear lights are super cool, and I adore the sporty style. With mine, I wanted everything blacked out: wing mirrors, wheels, bodywork, everything! I particularly love my MINI Electric’s Enigmatic Black paint. It has a lovely iridescence to it, so in certain lights it looks pure black, and sometimes navy. I think other brands have too much choice and options, but the MINI Electric offered just the right amount of customisation to make it feel unique to me. I don’t think I’ve seen another MINI Electric that looks exactly like mine.”

“The MINI Electric makes charging easy.”

“I have to say, I was a bit worried about ‘range anxiety’. I didn’t ever want to be on a long journey without enough charge. But, with the MINI Electric, I’ve had absolutely no problems. It’s exactly what I need. To be honest, there will be times where I forget to charge overnight, but I’ve still got enough left to get to work or pop to the shops. When it comes to charging, the UK’s network is getting bigger every day, and the MINI Electric smartphone app shows me where all the chargers are, which makes finding them easy.

As with any electric car, you need to plan your longer journeys a bit more carefully, but the MINI Electric smartphone app helps a lot. As time goes on, you also start to find chargers that work best for you. For example, tucked away rapid chargers that other people don’t know about, or pay-as-you-go ones that let you get a quick charge for next to nothing. My top tip: if you’ve got a spare 10 minutes, just find a charger and get a quick top-up. It only takes a few minutes and you’re safe in the knowledge you have enough charge to keep going. When it comes to the cost of charging: wow!

I used to spend £60 a month on petrol. Now, I reckon it costs me about £8 a week to charge my MINI Electric, and I don’t have to pay road tax either. The savings are immense. When charging at home, you can use the MINI Electric app to set certain times for charging. For example, I charge my MINI Electric between 2am and 6am because that’s when the cost is lowest. That means I know I’m always good-to-go in the mornings, and I’m saving money.”

“It’s got a gadget for everything.”

“With my MINI Electric, I went for the Level 3 trim, because I wanted the Harman Kardon sound system and the heated leather seats. The Harman Kardon speakers are really good. My partner is a sound technician, and he says they sound fantastic!

I wanted the leather upholstery because I need the seats to be durable. It’s a nice leather finish that feels high-end. I’ve had my MINI Electric for over a year, and it still looks brand new. All the surfaces are durable and super easy to clean. Plus, the heated seats are great. I often use the MINI Connect App to pre-warm my car in the mornings, so that when I get in it’s nice and toasty. Warming the car via the app also preconditions the battery, which helps give you better range.

One of my favourite features is how easily I can connect my phone. Apple CarPlay is amazing. It’s like having a big iPhone in the car. I often make calls when I’m driving, so the Bluetooth is great, and the ability to mirror the Waze app onto the touchscreen is super convenient. I also like the wireless charging pad, which is useful for keeping my phone topped up. Another standout feature is the big light-up dial on the dashboard. I love how you can change the colours. That big round dial almost makes you feel as though you’re sitting in a classic MINI, but with all the modern style of today’s cars. When it comes to safety, the Head-Up display is great. It’s nice not having to look down at the dashboard as much: you can keep your eyes on the road. When you drive past speed signs, the speed limit appears on the Head-Up display, which is useful. I also like how I can set everything – the wing mirrors, the Head-Up display – to my height. So, when someone else has been driving, I can click on my name in the menu, and everything adjusts to my preferences. That’s a really good feature.

The Park Assist is also great. When you need to parallel park in an awkward space, it just does it for you. When I first got my MINI Electric, I just went around parking in places I didn’t need to, just to use the feature! The front-collision warning beep is useful around town, too. If the car thinks you’re going to hit something it beeps and comes up on the dashboard.”

“The MINI Electric feels really spacious.”

“Even though the MINI Electric is a four-seater, it doesn’t feel small inside – it feels really spacious. I’ve had all sorts of things in the back: power tools, suitcases, surfboards and golf clubs. They all fit fine. In fact, when I drive to the range, my clubs actually fit without me having to drop the seats, which really surprised me.

When we put suitcases in the back, it’s easy to pop the rear seats down. I also really like the little area under the boot floor for all the cables. It helps to keep things nice and neat. The ability to move the boot floor up and down is good, too. The MINI Electric is a really versatile car in this respect."

IOLA, SOUTH YORKSHIRE.

“MAKE SURE YOU PLAN YOUR JOURNEYS BEFORE YOU GO.”

“My MINI Electric is my first electric car, but I’ve never really had any worries about charging. I was just curious as to how it worked. The questions I had were all pretty standard: How often do I have to charge? How easy is it? Where can I charge it? How long does it take? But, as I say, I’ve never had any issues. I do most of my charging at home via our Pod Point wallbox, but it’s easy to go further afield, too.

The MINI Electric smartphone app makes charging easy. When I’m at home, I can use the app to set the car to charge at certain times of day. I can see how much a charge will cost me, and how much range the car currently has. Then, when I’m out and about, it’s really easy to use the app to find chargers."

“MINI drivers always look super proud in their cars.”

“I’ve always loved the MINI. MINI owners always look really proud in their cars, and the customisation factor is a big plus. I absolutely love being an individual, and that’s why the MINI Electric really suits me.

When I ordered my MINI Electric, I wanted everything blacked out – apart from the yellow wing mirrors. The alloys are black, the door handles are black, the headlight rims are black. It’s got tinted glass, too. And the sporty bonnet scoop. I love how it looks: knowing there isn’t another MINI Electric on the road that looks exactly like it. It’s unique! When my car arrived at the dealer, the sales team were so impressed with it that they started to spec new forecourt cars with a similar all-black look.

But it’s not just the in-your-face parts of my MINI Electric that I love. The light-up door sills are a great addition, as are the puddle lights under the wing mirrors that project onto the floor when you get out of the car.”

“A really positive driving experience.”

“I do a real mix of city and countryside driving around Yorkshire, and my MINI Electric is perfect for both. It really shifts when you put your foot down, thanks to the electric torque. It’s perfectly sized for town and country roads, too: not too big; not too small. And it handles really well. It’s a really positive driving experience.

The best thing for me with electric driving is the regenerative braking – that ability to put energy back into the battery when you lift off the accelerator. It’s a different way of driving, but you get used to it so quickly. It makes you more conscious about how you’re using energy, and I think that’s great. Everyone should be aware of their energy consumption, and the MINI Electric really helps in that regard.”

“I don’t charge every night – only when I need to.”

I do most of my charging at home via our Pod Point wallbox, but it’s easy to go further afield, too. The MINI Electric smartphone app makes charging easy. When I’m at home, I can use the app to set the car to charge at certain times of day. I can see how much a charge will cost me, and how much range the car currently has. Then, when I’m out and about, it’s really easy to use the app to find chargers.

I definitely don’t charge every night; only when I have to. People would be surprised to find that most journeys are actually quite short, and don’t require a full battery. For people worried about range and charging, I’d say: make sure you plan journeys before you go, use the Green driving modes to help preserve range, don’t carry unnecessary luggage, and only get the charge you need.

If I’m popping to the supermarket, I might grab 15 mins on a rapid charger here and there. Or, if I’m going out for a meal, I’ll use a slower destination charger to get a few more miles. If you’ve never run out of petrol, there’s no reason you’ll ever run out of charge! There are chargers everywhere these days.

The low running costs are fantastic, too. It’s definitely a big reason why I went electric. No tax, very low insurance, and the charging costs are tiny compared to fuelling petrol and diesel cars. The government grants are useful too. There’s no congestion charge, and you can park for free in a lot of places when you’re charging.

I’d say my MINI Electric is pretty integral to my life nowadays. It has to be really! I drive to work in it every day, I put my child seat in back, I chuck my skates in the boot, and just drop the rear seats for bigger things when I need to. For a compact city car, it’s very spacious. It’s just flexible, really.”

“I’m never pushed for space”

"The MINI Electric is the perfect size for me. Alongside running my chai business, I’m also a photographer and I have a lot of kits to carry. Cases, tripods and batteries – they all fit in the back fine. And the ability to fold the rear seats down means that I’m never pushed for space.

I also have a small dog called Ziggy, and she absolutely loves the car. First, the lack of engine noise is great for her. It means she’s really relaxed when we’re driving. Second, there’s plenty of space for her. She’s only small, but a medium-sized dog would be just as happy with the space in the back as well.

If you’re considering the switch to electric, I’d have to say just do it! I get so much more of a rush in the MINI Electric than I do in a petrol or diesel car. I think if people were better educated about electric cars in general – charging, costs, range – they’d be more comfortable about making the change.

To install your MINI Wallbox and a wallbox from one of our partner companies correctly, we recommend using our installation service. Simply arrange this service with your MINI Dealership or our official installation partner (Deutsche Telekom Technischer Service GmbH) who will then take on all consultation, installation and start-up tasks.

Some charging columns can be operated using the MINI Charging app. The app, which features an integrated QR code scanner, is as easy to use as it is to install. To do so, simply download the app, enter your MINI Charging contract number and your PIN.

Your vehicle is charged using cashless payments – you can pay conveniently via a monthly direct debit from your payment account. Your MINI Charging online account provides you with a constant overview of your charging processes and the costs.

DC quick charging stations are the better option when you need to charge your car fast. They can recharge your vehicle's battery quickly – while you go shopping or have a bite to eat, for example. The charging process lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. This type of charging station is referred to as a DC charging station, for short."
